Online & Virtual Therapy in California
For some clients, online therapy is a viable option that can be just as effective as in-person therapy.
Online & Virtual Therapy
When I started as a therapist, I had no idea how much I’d enjoy giving therapy virtually. Enter 2020 and *Cue the pandemic. Then just when I was starting out my career, I could only do therapy online. AND I LOVED IT. I still felt connected to my clients, I still felt like I could pick up on body language, and I still felt like we were making progress. Online therapy allowed me the privilege of seeing clients across the state of California.
Studies have found that online therapy can continue to be effective. In fact, some clients may prefer online to in-person sessions. I have worked with a range of clients online from middle-aged children to older adults.
Online therapy doesn’t simply always have to be talk therapy. For those that need a little more stimulation, there are creative ways to use that platform that can help clients stay engaged. With some clients, we may talk the entire time. With other clients, we can play games, do art, practice exercises together, go on a walk, etc. I love finding creative ways to use the virtual platform.
There is no doubt about it — online therapy is and can be a different experience than in-person. But just how different and how much of a priority it is varies from client to client. No matter what, online therapy can be a great option. :)

Online Therapy FAQs
-
Online therapy can be a viable option, but is not a great fit for everyone. Those with severe symptomology or have an increased level of risk might not be appropriate for the virtual platform. Additionally, young children or those who struggle greatly with their focus/concentration on a virtual setting might also not be a great fit. Lastly, clients also must be in the state of California.

I actually have a few counties where I have a seen a majority of my virtual clients. I have seen a large chunk of my online clients in Northern and Southern California. For SoCal, most of my online clients have been from LA County and Orange County. In NorCal, a majority of my online clients have been from Contra Costa County. I am quite familiar with the demographic in Newport Beach, CA & Danville, CA.

Take a moment to reflect on your priorities in therapy. Is it possible to achieve these online? Does online make more sense for where your life is at right now? Do you tend to still feel connected when talking to someone virtually?
